Bletchley 1st XV 45–33 Marlow II’s
Counties 2 Berks, Bucks & Oxon (East)

Bletchley 1st XV produced an impressive second-half comeback at Manor Fields, overturning a 12–21 half-time deficit to defeat Marlow II’s 45–33 in a fiercely contested Counties 2 encounter.

In a match featuring twelve tries, several contentious decisions and plenty of attacking rugby, Bletchley demonstrated resilience and determination to overcome a difficult opening half and secure another valuable bonus-point victory on home turf.

The visitors made the brighter start, opening the scoring at 7 minutes through a well-executed driving maul from a lineout. The conversion was successful, giving Marlow an early 0–7 advantage.

Bletchley gradually began to find their rhythm, with their forwards providing a strong platform and the backs looking dangerous whenever they were able to move the ball into space.

At 16 minutes, flanker Ollie Comery intercepted a Marlow pass inside his own half and raced deep into opposition territory before finding captain and full-back Kyle Gibbings in support. Two quick phases later, prop Wade Twiselton powered over the line to score Bletchley’s opening try. Gibbings was unable to add the conversion, leaving the score at 5–7.

Just three minutes later, Bletchley struck again through an excellent piece of attacking awareness. Fly-half Jake Allen spotted space behind the Marlow defensive line and delivered a well-placed crossfield kick from inside his own half. Comery collected the ball, stepped the covering winger and raced away to finish a superb individual try. Gibbings converted to give Bletchley a 12–7 lead.

The contest became increasingly physical, and at 23 minutes flanker Luke Cooper was shown a yellow card for an alleged trip, a decision that left the home side frustrated.

Marlow capitalised on their opportunities as the half progressed. At 35 minutes, following a penalty awarded against Cooper close to the Bletchley try line, the visitors worked through the phases before crossing from a ruck. The conversion restored their advantage at 12–14.

Three minutes later, another disputed penalty, this time against prop Josh Sprules, gave Marlow an attacking opportunity. Following a lineout close to the Bletchley line, the visitors capitalised on a misdirected throw and crashed over for their third try. The successful conversion extended their lead to 12–21.

Despite periods of promising attacking rugby and some excellent defensive work close to their own line, Bletchley went into the interval trailing by nine points, with plenty of work required to turn the contest around.

Bletchley returned for the second half with renewed urgency, increasing their attacking tempo and beginning to put sustained pressure on the Marlow defence.

At 44 minutes, scrum-half Ben Ruoss, playing out of his usual position, spotted an opportunity from a ruck just five metres from the Marlow line. Taking matters into his own hands, Ruoss picked the ball up and danced through the defence to score. Gibbings converted, reducing the deficit to 19–21.

The try provided a significant boost to Bletchley’s momentum, with their forwards continuing to establish a strong platform through the scrum and lineout.

At 54 minutes, another excellent attacking kick from Allen caused problems for the Marlow defence. A five-man Bletchley chase put the visitors under immediate pressure, with winger John Waite producing a powerful tackle on the covering defender. Allen reacted quickly to steal possession before popping the ball back to Waite, who dived over to finish the move. The conversion was unsuccessful, but Bletchley had regained the lead.

Ruoss continued to cause problems for the Marlow defence and completed his hat-trick at 57 minutes. Picking the ball from the back of an attacking scrum, he spotted space on the blindside and dived over the line for his third try of the afternoon. Gibbings added the conversion.

Marlow refused to surrender, responding at 62 minutes with another close-range effort. Replacement second row Carl Rudkin appeared to get a hand to the ball as the visitors attempted to ground it, but the try was awarded.

The conversion provided an unusual moment of entertainment. Marlow’s fly-half attempted a quick drop-kick conversion and successfully sent the ball between the posts, only to be instructed to retake the kick. His second attempt was unsuccessful, much to the amusement of the home supporters.

Bletchley continued to find success through their attacking set pieces, with Ruoss adding another excellent finish following a sustained passage of play. Centre Jack Lawrence initially broke the defensive line from a lineout before Comery carried deep into Marlow territory.

After several phases, a high tackle on Gibbings earned Bletchley a penalty, which was kicked to touch. A strong attacking lineout and driving maul created the platform for the ball to be moved down the blindside, where Waite produced a clever inside pass to Ruoss to finish the move.

The forwards also made their mark on the scoreboard through Cooper. Following an excellent effort to disrupt and turn over a Marlow scrum inside the visitors’ 22, Cooper reacted quickly, picking the ball from the back and attacking the blindside to score. Gibbings added the conversion.

Throughout the second half, Bletchley’s scrum and lineout provided an excellent foundation for their attacking play, while their defensive organisation, particularly when defending close to their own five-metre line, repeatedly frustrated the visitors.

Marlow added another try at 78 minutes following several phases of attacking play, ensuring the contest remained competitive into the closing stages.

Bletchley were reduced to 14 players at 79 minutes when second row Ed Findlay received a yellow card for a tip tackle, but the home side had done enough to secure the result.

The final whistle confirmed an entertaining 45–33 victory for Bletchley, completing an excellent turnaround after trailing by nine points at the interval.
