Bletchley 39 – 27 Bicester
Counties 1 Tribute Ale Southern North – League Fixture
Bletchley produced a determined and resilient performance in bitterly cold conditions at Manor Fields to record a 39–27 home victory over Bicester, earning a valuable five league points despite spending much of the match playing with reduced numbers.
The home side started with real intensity. At 8 minutes, hooker Josh Sprules finished off a series of powerful pick-and-carry phases close to the line, forcing his way through traffic to open the scoring. Captain and fly half Cameron Watkins added the conversion to make it 7–0.
Bicester responded at 12 minutes with a converted try following a lineout and several tight carries, levelling the score at 7–7.
Bletchley hit back quickly. At 16 minutes, winger Ollie Comery made a superb line break and interception, covering around 70% of the pitch before passing a perfectly timed inside ball. Watkins, in excellent support, finished the move and converted his own try to restore a 14–7 lead.
The visitors struck again at 32 minutes, moving the ball wide after multiple phases to score a converted try, edging ahead 14–17. Bletchley responded through the boot of Watkins, who slotted a penalty at 36 minutes to level the scores at 17–17.
The match then reached a pivotal moment at 39 minutes. An incident began when a Bicester player lifted Watkins into the air and and carried him airborne for several metres despite Watkins not having the ball, leading to a brief fracas involving players from both sides. After deliberation, the referee issued two yellow cards to Bicester, while winger Scott Aspinall received a red card and prop Luke Cooper a yellow card for Bletchley. The outcome left Bletchley playing the remainder of the match with 14 men, and temporarily reduced to 13.
A penalty went in Bicester’s favour who levelled again at 39 minutes with a penalty kick to make it 17–17, which closed out the first half.
Despite the setback, Bletchley regrouped impressively. Early in the second half, at 45 minutes, number 8 and vice-captain Archie Barrett bounced off multiple defenders to power over and give the hosts renewed momentum.
Bicester responded Bicester replied with a penalty at 55 minutes to cut it to 22–20 Followed by a converted try at 58 minutes, created by a 2-on-1 on the edge, nudging the visitors back in front despite an excellent tackle by full back Ben Ruoss, the score now sat 22-27 in favour of the visitors.
However, the determined Bletchley response was outstanding. At 63 minutes, slick handling in midfield saw Watkins break the line before feeding Matty Ross, whose strong carry drew defenders. A quick loop back to Watkins allowed him to move the ball wide, where Comery finished clinically in the corner.
Momentum swung firmly in Bletchley’s favour. At 69 minutes, debutant flanker Sam Garwood marked his first appearance in emphatic fashion. An intentional overthrow at the lineout from Ross found Garwood at the back, allowing him to burst through the defensive line and score. Watkins converted to extend the lead.
Bletchley sealed the result at 76 minutes when Barrett crossed for his second try of the afternoon, finishing a well-executed blindside move down the wing.
Across the match, Bletchley’s forwards were relentless with ball in hand, repeatedly winning the gain line through strong pick-and-carry work. The backline also showed clear structure and confidence, executing several well-drilled attacking patterns despite the numerical disadvantage.
There were standout individual performances throughout. Alex Grogan, stepping up to the 1st XV at scrum half, delivered a composed and energetic display and was deservedly named Man of the Match. Lock Sam Brown was dominant in defence and excellent under the high ball, while Barrett once again showcased his all-round quality. Garwood, on debut, was outstanding - aggressive in contact, fearless in defence, and tireless across the pitch.
In freezing conditions and under sustained pressure, Bletchley showed real character, discipline and unity. To come through adversity and secure a five-point league win made this a particularly satisfying afternoon at Manor Fields.
