Bletchley 2s Victors

Jon Stevens3 Oct 2016 - 21:01

After a long wait - a victory against Ampthill...

Following an extremely disappointing loss to Dunstablians the week prior, Bletchley were in action again at Manor Fields against Ampthill Extras.

Bletchley came out of the blocks firing, eager to start strong after a poor showing in the first quarter the previous week and immediately attached the experienced Ampthill side. The pressure told with Rob Brown opening the scoring after a great run. Conversion was added to make the score 7-0.

Ampthill hit back and played to their strengths, and whilst Bletchley looked strong on the attack, their penalty count went out of control and the visitors took advantage to score a converted try to level the scores. Bletchley were rattled and gave away penalty after penalty, before losing Ciaran to a suspect yellow card which resulted in a penalty try with the extras added, 7 - 14.Bletchley hit back through full back Kelvin Rudkin, who collected the ball deep in his own half and proceeded to out gas half the Ampthill team and cross the line to make it 12-14.

Shortly before half time, Bletchley were caught cold again with Amptill crossing to make it 12-19.

A strong half time chat had the right effect and Bletchley came out strong in the second half and started to apply the pressure. The back row of Gaz Bancroft, Ed Young and debuting colt Jack Mullan started to give the older visitors real trouble and all of a sudden Bletchley's fitness started to show and was rewarded when Ciaran scored following a great counter attack, conversion scored 19-19.

Bletchley continued to attack and Ampthill, though still dangerous, struggled to contain the hosts and with 10 minutes to go, man of the match Rob Brown broke through and scored to make it 24-19, conversion missed.

With the clock running down, Ampthill came back strong, but the Bletchley defence held firm despite the pressure and with 5 minutes to go, won a penalty just inside the visitors 22. With only five points in it, the home side opted for posts and Kelvin Rudkin stepped up to slot the penalty to make it 27 - 19.

The last few minutes were a scrappy affair, with no further scores for either side.

Final score: Bletchley 2s 27 - Ampthill Extras 19

This was a hard fought win, with a number of players missing, that said Bletchley will know they should have done far better against this side - penalty count and first up tackles must get better if they are to challenge for the league. Bletchley are now up to second and their next league game will be against Kempston on 22nd October.
