U13's friendly match
Mens Own 32 Bletchley 38
On an extremely windy morning, Bletchley U13's travelled the short distance up the A508 to play Northampton Mens Own. Bletchley were missing several talented players, and poorer than usual play in the Bletchley backs led to Mens Own scoring more points against us than any other team this season. Bletchley did just enough to record a 32 - 38 away win, but on another day, this could have been a heavy defeat.
Mens Own were short of front row players, so it was agreed the game would be played with uncontested scrums. Bletchley played the first half into the howling wind, and immediately came under strong pressure from Mens Own, resulting in an unconverted try by the hosts. Finlay levelled the scores, but 2 further Mens Own tries versus 1 excellent intercept and score from Dominic saw Mens Own lead by 15 - 12 at half time.
Bletchley had the strong wind at their backs in the second half, and three converted tries saw Bletchley build a 15 - 33 lead and move into a seemingly comfortable position. Unfortunately at this stage, half a dozen of the Bletchley squad decided en masse that tackling and good positioning was now an optional requirement, which let Mens Own right back into the game. Bletchley conceded 3 late tries, scoring only 1 more themselves, and did just about enough to hold on for a very close win by 32 - 38.
Bletchley's forwards can feel proud of their hard work this morning in testing conditions. Some of Bletchley's backs will need to vastly improve their decision making, tackling and positional play if they are to hold onto starting positions when we return to full strength in the coming weeks. The good news and big opportunity for players and coaches is that tough and close games like this are good for us to learn from, and are better for players' long term development than some of the easier wins we've had this season.
We now head into a short Easter break, so there is no rugby on Wednesday or Sunday next week. The next training session will therefore be on Wednesday 8th April, which will be a very important session for all players to attend please.
